Non-Veg truth of India came to the fore in NFHS!

Ahmedabad city of Gujarat. Here the Municipal Corporation had banned the sale of non-veg on the side of the roads on 15 November 2021. Soon, similar orders were issued in many other cities as well. In some areas of Delhi, UP and Uttarakhand, orders have been given to banning the sale of non-veg in Gujarat. Videos also surfaced in which some people were seen threatening the shop owners to remove the non-veg shops. But all these government and coercive type efforts were in vain.

Recently, data from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) has come, after which the question is arising whether forcibly banning non-veg is the right step. This is because the NFHS figures show that a large population of the country likes non-vegetarian food. This number is so huge that it can take anyone by surprise. It has also revealed in the survey of NFHS-5 that the crowd of non-vegetarian in India is increasing continuously.

How many people eat non-veg?

The National Family Health Survey (NFHS) organized between 2019-2021. According to the Indian Express, data from NFHS-5 shows that in the last 6 years, there has been a 5 percent increase in the number of men in the country who eat chicken, fish, and other types of meat. At the same time, the number of such women has increased by 0.6 percent.

According to the survey, 83.4 percent of men and 70.6 percent of women in the age group of 15-49 years eat non-vegetarian food, compared to 78.4 percent of such men and 70 percent of women 6 years ago.

It can also be said that only 16.6% of men in this age group do not eat non-veg, this percentage is 29.4 among women.

The number of meat-eaters once a week increased sharply

According to the NHFS-5 data, the number of meat-eaters once a week has increased rapidly. Under the survey, 57.3 percent of men and 45.1 percent of women in the age group of 15 to 49 years admitted to eating non-veg once a week. Whereas according to the survey for the year 2015-16, 48.9 percent of men and 42.8 percent of women used to eat non-veg once a week.

People eat more eggs

According to NHFS, there has been an increase in the number of egg eaters compared to those who eat chicken and fish. During the 2019-21 survey, 84.07 percent of men said to eat eggs daily, weekly or occasionally. The number of such men was 80.3% in 2015-16. At the same time, the number of women has increased from 70.8 percent to 72 percent.

The NFHS-5 survey conducted in two phases between June 17, 2019, and April 30, 2021. It included 707 districts in 29 states and seven union territories. The survey data proves that the number of non-veg eaters in the country is very high. This fact reminds me of the news of December 2021. Then, when non-veg forcibly banned in many cities of Gujarat, the High Court had said, ‘How can you decide what I want to eat? If you do not like non-vegetarian food, this is your perspective. But how can you stop a person from taking the food of his choice? You can’t do this.
